Purchasing a home with an unpermitted addition

Paolo Steffen
Posted

Last September I purchased my first investment property and currently have tenants in the home. The home was listed as a 2 bedroom 1 bath but it actually has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The house has an unpermitted addition on it which includes that extra room and bathroom. I would like to somehow have that addition looked at and possibly get permitted so I could add value to the home legally. My question is, what first steps should I take in making this happen? Should I go directly to the city and inform them of the addition? Should I send out a general contractor to inspect the addition? Any advice on this is greatly appreciated, thank you.
