Wholesaling (and Cold-Calling) While Working For A Broker?

I am about to begin taking a course to get my RE License. I did some research on the cold-calling and wholesaling and it seems a tad bit more promising than working for a broker. (by more promising I mean better returns and results) Now would it be possible to do my own side thing while working for a broker? And to back that question up, should I just wholesale but have my license to back me up (I'm assuming)?

Sidenote: I notice Brandon Turner on his podcasts say that people come on here wanting to wholesale and then leave. Just so you guys know, I actually plan on doing rentals but I'm REALLY trying to be able to quit my 9-5 lifestyle.
