Looking at a house next week, possibly buying

Advice needed!

I am looking at a single family home next week. House was built in 1987 and needs some renovations from what I can tell from the pictures, but is set at a very good price. I want to know what kind of common problems I should look out for when buying a home. Also, what steps I should take after looking at the home? Should I go to a lender and see how much of a loan I could get, then go to an agent and get further assistance on following through with purchasing if I like it?
