In a down market, how do you know if you hit bottom?

Much of the country is in an upward trending market right now, but in some of the big cities such as Los Angeles, there is a buyers market beginning in some sectors such as apartments.  How do you know when the market has hit bottom?  I'm curious to hear everyones thoughts.
