Bought Buy and Hold(s) While Still Renting

I am interest in knowing what the experience was like for investors who purchased buy and hold(s) while they were still renting. Would you advise a new investor to do this or would you advise against it?

All responses are welcome but I really would prefer responses from those who have actually went through this.

The apartment we rent in costs us $1300 a month in rent, it would probably sell for $300,000. I can generate more than $1300 a month net with $300,000. So that's what I do.

Makes sense to me, especially since my wife and I enjoy traveling, we don't have to stay tied to a place, although she has been talking about wanting a base :S
