1031 Exchange questions

When you do a 1031 exchange does the intermediary ONLY hold your gains on a property or the FULL sale amount?

For example you buy something for 100k. You sell for 150K. Is only the GAIN (50k) held or the full amount of the sale?

Does only your gain have to be reinvested or the full dollar amount of your sale have to be?
