Does Converting a Detached Garage impact future value?
My wife and I are looking at a house in La Mesa and our goal would be to turn the 450 sq. ft. detached garage into a small studio in order to help supplement the mortgage payment. We have been advised by some people that converting a garage into a studio will lessen the value of the house when we go to sell it in the future and that putting the roughly $20-25,000 into the garage would be better spent on other things for the house. Now I don't necessarily agree with this, however, I am very new to this world and I am curious if converting the garage would have a negative impact if we sell the house in the future. Does anyone have experience in this realm that can give me some solid perspective?
