How to get to know a new town/city

Hello,

I'm interested in learning what makes a town/city a good opportunity to invest in.  What indicators do you look for to indicate there's potential grow or the market is buzzing. Should I be looking at incomes? Population? More importantly where do I look to understand demographics?
