Renting a property that is for "sale"?

I'm a newbie here and my dad is supposed to start looking for a new house for us in March. I want to find a nice house with a nice bedroom layout for me in a specific location in my county. But I am confused on real estate websites when it says there are like 400 houses "for sale" and like 20-30 to "rent". Am I missing the possibility that you can rent a house that is for "sale" or does that only apply towards those listed for "rent"? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.
