What do you do when hit with a stop work order in Chicago?

I was hit with a stop work order in Chicago for partitions in the basement that were there when we purchased the building. I need advice on best way to move forward. I emailed and called the inspector but did not receive a response back. I went down to meet with the supervisor of the inspector at the department of buildings. He said I need to hire an architect and submit drawings to secure a permit. I am now looking to hire an architect to render a drawing for the basement. Is it possible in the meantime to pay the fine and acquire the necessary permit to complete the other parts of the house. (i.e., drywall, paint, cabinets, etc.).

Step 1 is to hire the architect. Make sure he/she is self certified. It can make all the difference in the world in regards to timing. Self certified architects can typically get permits in 30 days. After you get the plans, give them to your contractor to bid the work. Regardless of what they tell you, contractors cannot give you an honest bid without seeing the plans.

The answer to your other question is no, you can't pull an ez permit to correct most building violations.
