Advice on getting a house built

Hello BP members!

I need a bit of advice on buying land and then getting a property built on it. My wife and I are looking to sell our primary residence and get a house built. Mainly get a house built that will be a better option for house hacking. We already have the floor plan that we want but I guess the question is how do we proceed? Should we buy the land, find a builder, and have him build our house? Or should we look to get some cheap land via auctions? I like the auction route because the land we are looking to purchase is inside the DFW area so it's not going to be cheap. One of the reasons I'm not looking to go straight to a builder and have them get the land is because they usually go to areas with HOA's which won't work with my strategy. Thanks for any advice.
