Best way to determine hot zip codes

Good afternoon fellow BP members,

What is the most accurate way without having access to MLS to determine the hot areas in a city that SFH's are being sold? I've checked out realtor.com and played with some filters to narrow it down to be more specific to age of homes, price, and sold price to determine if they might be in areas I can farm and drive for dollars for potential wholesale deals and get some targeted lists together. Any help would be very much appreciated.
