House Hacking in San Diego

Hi All - 

I am new to real estate investing but am looking to get started with buying a duplex that I can live in and rent the other side out.  I realize its not going to completely offset living costs but I would like to be able to subsidize my living expenses this way while having someone else help me pay off my mortgage. 

My challenge is it seems like this is nearly an impossible task in San Diego.  What is everyones experience on doing this in San Diego?
