Renovating from afar

Has anyone ever renovated from afar?  I love old houses and I am considering purchasing one Several states away and renovate it. I’ve never done this type of renovation but the thought of it is so exciting.  I’m scared because the renovation will take me months/years and it be be the costliest renovation I’ve ever done on a rental.  Who has experience with this?
