Wanting to build a new house, some questions.

Hey guys, 

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct section so apologies for that. I recently inherited two pieces of land from my parents with no actual house on it. I'm interested in building homes on these vacant lands and renting it to tenants. 

As a newbie, do you guys recommend this option or should I leave the land vacant for now and look into investing in other real estates. My goal is to hold have these real estates appreciate overtime. 

P.S I'm from Melbourne, Australia.
