Short vs long term holds

We have 13 units (mostly duplexes and one 4 plex). We bought them a year ago hoping to keep them until we retire but I’m learning that a lot of investors only hold for 5-7 years? What is the reasoning behind this thought process? How long do most people hold onto 2-10 unit buildings?

Thanks
