Spousal credit score

Hey guys I am planning on moving to Colorado or Arizona in July and I plan on buying a home as a first time buyer. My credit is going up however my wife's score is very low with bad income debt ratio. She had to short sale a home when we were dating and then had some delinquencies with accounts when she had to take time off to care for her Sick mother. We are married now and I was wondering if a spouse needs to be on the loan for a mortgage and/or if they ask for her credit on a FHA loan?

Any answer will help to determine if I need to rent to get her stuff paid off and score up
