New house, old tax deed

I purchased a 4plex with traditional financing last month and received a letter today while finishing the last bit of work on my rehab stating that in 2016 a tax lein was purchased against the property and I now have ninety days to pay this off or forfeit the property. Sorry for the run on sentence but can somebody please explain WTF went wrong here?
