Lower offer extension

I recently put a lower offer on a place that was on the market for 90 days. The listing agent said that he would need extra time to let the sellers know because they just moved out of town. 

I agreed. Is this a technique to leverage my offer? Should I stick to hard deadlines or show that I am willing to be flexible?
