State Grants for Rehabbing Historic Buildings

Does anyone have experience with using grant money from their state to rehab historic properties? If so, would you recommend others using their state for grant money or another alternative? What were some common pitfalls and successes you had? How long did it take you before you received funding? How did your state monitor your spending of the grant money and did it effect your personal life?
