Sacrificing and Saving for future investments

My lease was up in my apartment about year ago. My wife and I were looking to rent a home. My mother n law insisted that we stay with her until we found a place. While staying there we paid her a set amount which helped my wife and I save but it didn really help their financial situation. Due to my in laws having a declining business it put them in debt. Which also left us to help out more financially. Which also wasn’t a problem but they decided to sell their home and downsize recently. They’ve asked me and my wife if we wanted to move in again in order to help them save as well. But I want my own place but I also want to save for my own rental properties as well. I don’t mind making sacrifices in order to be successful in the future but this situation has me all over the place. I was curious to know how many people were faced with similar situations where they had to make sacrifices for the future.
