Better ways to find probate leads than pricey online directories?

I know probates can be a great lead source, but I don't want to dish out hundreds of dollars a months for a couple hundred leads (if that) from a website. Is probate information public record that I can get from the courthouse? Or are there any more effective and efficient ways to get these leads?
