Exterior Siding For Mult-families

I am analyzing a deal on line and the seller mentions that repairs will need to be made to the siding (clap board,wood). What are several ways to repair this type of siding? Paint, replace with vinal? Just trying to get an idea to see if its worth my time even going to look at.
