Legal way to write a referral fee?

Hey guys, I got a house referrered to me by a friend and he requested a $1000 referral fee which I don't care to pay since I bought the property $30k less then market value. What would be the "legal" terminalogy to classify the refferal fee under? He is not a real estate agent?
