Cost to build a new house

Wondering if anyone can share a good resource(s) for estimating the cost per sq. ft to build a new house in a given area? For example, is there a local building society that typically tracks this info, or does it require calling carpenters, local planning departments etc?

RSMeans books is what some professional and college courses teach. It is pretty pricing but might be able to get it cheaper used somewhere.
