House hacking my first deal

I have fell in love with the idea of house hacking and would love to do it as my first deal. To me this is the perfect way to get your feet wet in the real estate world and a amazing way to help save up money for future investments. While this idea seems full proof, I do understand at some point you will lose money on a deal and will make a risky decision that won't work. My question is how do I go about making sure that I don't mess up on my first deal because to me that can set you back years from financial freedom.
