Return on investment in the USA

Hello.

This is actually my first post on bigger pockets, although I have been a member for sometime.

I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I am a professional architect who LOVES property investment and development. I have recently started my own architectural practice and I am looking at using it as a means to invest in property.

Just out of interest, what are the Returns on Investment that you guys experience in the USA? In South Africa, we look at a ROI for property sales from 20% and up and look at a yield for rental properties of 6/7% and up.

I look forward to your thoughts...
