Won bid but auction.com pulled out of the deal?

I recently bid on a home through auction.com for the first time. We won the bid! As I waited a week for the documents, my realtor called to inform me the seller pulled out of the deal? How can a home be listed on auction.com and allow someone to bid all the way through a deal to go as far as to send you a letter that you won the bid, just to turn around and say nevermind?? Can anyone help me with this? Is this legal?
