Fix and flip homes in my area

I came across a few properties listed on Zillow in local area that may seem to be great deals as they are motivated sellers. What are some great steps i should take? Should i ask a local carpenter to go with me and check them out and pay him a few dollars for an estimate on what work it needs? What is the first step i should do or ask after finding a home for a fix up?
