Best sources for historical multi-family price data

Hello all,

I'm a new investor hoping to save myself some research time by crowdsourcing your wisdom!

Here's what I want to find. I would like to be able to pick a given metro area, sort by property type (preferably with a "multi-family residential" option), and then view property-sale price and (if possible) unit-rental price historical data for that entire metro area. It would be great if this were available in an easy-to-assess graphical form. I would hope that the data would extend back as many years as possible—a decade or more at least.

I've been poking around a bit already, so I know that some data is available from standard sources (Trulia, Zillow, realtors' associations, etc.). But I'm yet to find a source that does exactly what I'm looking for here, and—even if I had—I wanted to check here to make sure I'm not missing the best sources! Is there any industry standard for this sort of data? What do you guys use?

In response, please feel free to include pay sources—I wouldn't shy away from spending a bit for the right data here.

Thanks in advance!

M.J. Hoda
