looking to purchase first home to rehab and live in after. HELP!

I live in Buffalo Ny. I am just looking to purchase my first home just to rehab and live in for a while. I willing to purchase a home for anywhere between $5,000-$10,000 and I'm having the hardest time locating a property. I am willing to do all the repairs over the time. I know the house auction is coming up soon I can go there but I really don't want to deal with the hassle. I do see a couple of properties that I am interested in but the thing is they are listed on the tax auction that's coming up in October. Can you recommend or have any idea on how I can find any cheap property.
