Buying a property with a parent

My father asked me to be on the deed for a rental house he is buying. He will handle the mortgage, he just wants me on the deed. His reasoning is that this will more easily allow me to manage the property if he passes (he is 70) -- he doesn't want my mother to have to manage or deal with the place. Does this make sense? Also, do I have to sign the offer contract? What am I committing to if I do?
