Wholesale property going to auction

I'm brand new at this, and I found a great property, but it's scheduled for auction. Can I still pursue this? Or is it too late? The homeowner is still trying to sell, but if it gets sold at auction the homeowner won't walk away with a dime, but if it's going to auction then doesn't that mean the bank owns it? Just a bit confused so if anyone can help I would appreciate it! Thank you
