Direct Mail: Do hand written postcards make a difference?

Im going to begin my first direct mail marketing campaign here shortly and and trying to decide whether it is better to just have the post cards printed or if I could use hand written messages as a way to separate myself from the others in my market, or if it would actually do any good.

Also, do fancier post cards get a better response rate than plain ones?

THanks
