New to this..what is the best way to get leads on new properties?

I'm a green tomato to the real estate business. I'm in the process of buying my first home. I'm pretty good at keeping up to what is being listed but I never can get to it first. Besides having my agent set up automatic emails on new listings, What is the best way to get leads on new properties?

Well other than scouring every property on the MLS. The best thing to do next is to look for off market properties.

Here are some ways to do it. 

1.  Drive for dollars.  Look for ugly houses knock on the door find out who the owner is and call em.

2.  Cold call.   Same as above but call rather than knock 

3. Direct mail using a list.  Send people a letter telling them you want to buy their house

4. Network at Real estate events

5. Bandit signs, a sign on the street that says i want to buy a house

6. Tell everyone you know you are looking for a house, Facebook, friends, family, church...

If you do all these things with enough passion, you WILL find deals.  I would suggest just doing 1 of them and doing it well.
