Would you allow existing owners a "grace period" after closing?

I have a friend who is closing on his first primary residence today. He is sending his wire to the title company today, but is not taking possession of the property until 17 days from today. The current owners will occupy the property until then.

I get that there are clauses and what not saying they are liable for any damages, etc until you take possession, but would you send over your down payment, take ownership of the property and hope for 17 days the existing owners (now tenants) will leave it in the same condition and if they do damage the property-that they will fix it.

I personally think it's a terrible idea, but I could be wrong and this could be a common procedure.

Thoughts?
