There is no doubt that the physical environment affects the mood of people; just think of a how a messy place can make you feel low or how walking in a beautiful landscape can calm you down. It’s all because of the psychological effects that the environment has for us. If the surrounding environment can influence your mood to such an extent, why don’t you try it at office?

Creating a pleasant environment at office can keep your employees creative, productive and happy. It doesn’t mean you have to spend lots of money to change the office environment. Just think of a few easy and affordable methods. Below mentioned are a few tips to design a cool office at low cost.

1. Illuminate the workspace

  • Lights at office play a very important role in making the employees more productive; it is even better if it’s natural daylight. Employees think more creatively and are more efficient when they work in good daylight. It’s advised not to take a basement if yours is a creative field or else you will have to spend lots of money to illuminate the space.
  • People spend lots of money unnecessarily on fancy ceilings, but the current trend is of no ceilings; exposed surfaces can look elegant. Instead of ceilings, they can invest on adding CFL bulbs which can mimic the natural light.

2. Bring in the great outdoors

  • It’s a known technique that any glimpse of nature can boost up the employees creativity. So it’s always a good idea to bring in some green and live plants inside the office.
  • It’s a proved technique that, having something green and alive thing near the desk will make the employees think more creatively. Any natural materials like unpainted wood can help on this front.

3. Be a neat-nick

  • Neatness always adds-on to the beauty of a space. Cleaning costs nothing but it radically enhances the look of your office. It’s really amazing how quickly a tidy and clean office can turn into a hurricane zone.
  • Maintain ‘no eating at desks’ policy; it keeps rubbish away from the desks and also crumbs off the floor. It’s also advised not have the bins at your desk, so that it avoids the inevitable pile up of waste near the workstations.

4. Use Corporate Art

  • Consider not to use soul-destroying posters of eagles and the same old inspirational phrases. There are lots of better alternatives that can add beauty to your office without breaking the budget.
  • Search online and download a digital image, and add your own custom effects by zooming or cropping. You can also enlarge the image with your favourite quote on it; it can become a unique art piece when it is matted and framed. Don’t just skimp over the size of the image; one or two big pieces can enhance the look of your work space.

5. Invest on Air Fresheners

  • When you think of fixing your office, it’s quite natural to get obsessed over how the things look. Along with the looks, you also have to consider the odour of your office. Changing the odour of office using pleasant air fresheners can make it a nicer place to work.
  • Recently, Takasago Corporation of Japan conducted a research on how the odour can affect the accuracy of typists. It was found that the typists made very less errors when they could smell something pleasant like lemon, jasmine and lavender.

So consider hiring a good designer who can save your money and deliver a workspace that offers a real value to your business, because employees will be most creative and productive when they feel inspired and valued.
