RESIDENCE OR RENTAL?

I'm learning all that I can about Real Estate Investing. However, I'm not sure if I want to purchase single family primary residence first or if I should purchase a duplex and rent out both units first. I know that I can purchase a duplex and reside in the lower. But, the thought of someone living above me gives me nightmares and living in upper is not possible. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated, Thank-you
