Wanting to start buying rent homes and need advice.

My wife and I have been throwing the idea around to start buying houses and renting them out. I've heard horror stories and stories of pure success. All the stories I've heard, not one of them told me how they started. I have little knowledge of how real estate works and no knowledge on how to find the right house. Is there anyone that can give a little advice and direction?
