Proxy bidding verses live bidding

If anyone here is doing a lot of auctions, do you know if live bidding is better than proxy bidding? I have been entering all my bids as proxy and I'm yet to win any auction. Today I missed out on a house by $100 which went to another third party bidder. It's getting very frustrating as I spend at least 6 hours per day researching the auction properties. I'm starting to wonder if I would be better off investing that time into my driving for dollars campaign.
