Researching Mortgage Data

Hi everyone,

Does anyone where know how to find accurate mortgage info on a home/person?

I know that I can call register of deeds office of the county and they can tell me the original mortgage amount as well as any other borrowings on someones name. My question is can I then find out what the current balance is on these?

Another way to phrase the questions: How is it that all of the junk mail I receive about refinancing my home shows the current balance on my mortgage???
