Escrow

Hello All,

I bought my primary residence, fsbo, and we closed at my mortgage lender's attorney's office.  I have a contract to purchase that I'm happy with, and prepared to fill out specific to each property, but I hear people talk about opening escrow and closing escrow.  I just don't understand what it means.  Can someone enlighten this noob?
