Partnership with Mother-in-law but not with step Father-in-law

Can my wife and I purchase a property with her mom as a partner but not her husband? 

The reason I ask is not because I have anything against my step father-in-law but because he has 2 kids from a previous marriage and a grandchild and we’re not looking to involve them in any of our real estate deals. We’re trying to build our own retirement and generational wealth for our children….not his.
