Why Invest in the Metaverse?

I have recently heard about the metaverse and have done a little bit of research myself and just do not understand why people/large companies are spending so much money to invest in real estate within a virtual reality. It seems like the next "big thing", but I personally am not into crypto or VR.

Can anyone enlighten me lol?

False scarcity and the perception that there are no good value plays in other investments right now. A lot of people regret missing $1 Bitcoin and think they may be on to the next big thing. I doubt it'll happen. People need a place to live. They don't need a nonexistent piece of 'land' that is in infinite supply.
