ADVICE: In search of NY/NJ Suburb for Property to House Hack
Hi everyone!
My husband and I want to move. We are currently in search of a neighborhood to settle down in but also house hack and set up for future rental properties, either in that same area or out of state. Basically ready to get the landlord thing started. We were about to get the ball rolling on an investment property upstate but the neighborhood ended up scaring us away! So we've changed strategies and want to house hack first instead of buy a full rental property. WE COULD REALLY USE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NEIGHBORHOODS!
We are looking for an area that fits into the following categories:
- Multifamily 300k max (3-4 family)
- Suburb of NY/NJ area (except Long Island)
- 1+1/2hr drive to city
- Access to nature/parks
- Well developed/developing
- Good school ratings
If ANYONE has any suggestions for neighborhoods, even if they don’t EXACTLY fit (and I know I’m asking a lot here for the price) please please comment on this post! Or any other suggestions at all. We would appreciate it.
Thanks!

- Multifamily 300k max (3-4 family) is not available anywhere in your radius in any bit of decent shape. 2-families in most accessible to NY areas are going to be around 500k minimum unless you are looking in areas with higher crime rates and lower appreciation potential. With your commute, request for good schools, and access to parks, 500k is the absolute minimum to get in within your radius. A 2-family even in what many would consider to be a bad area, that needs not a lot of work, will still run over 350k.
