@Leroy Aaron - I am in Chicago now, but I actually bought my first property in Louisville, KY.  I didn't know anything about real estate just the simple fact that I did not want to keep paying some well else rent.

I actually ended up purchasing the through auction.com and had no idea what I was doing.  I ended up doing a live and flip and doing most of the work myself with the help of a friend.  I even sanded the floors myself and it's the last time ill ever do that lol.

It was quite stressful living through the flip, but when I finally got it sold with no capital gains (lived in it for 2 out of the last 5 years).  It felt amazing!  

Best word to describe my real estate investing career is "roller coaster".  Every new project as I grow takes me to the bottom and then back to the top when we sell....
