Appraisal contingency - Afraid the appraisal would be higher

Hey.

I'm looking to send an offer for a property and my realtor suggested putting an offer in place with an appraisal contingency. My fear, being it's my first property, is that the appraisal would come higher than the offer, and I would need to pay more than what I initially offered.

Did this ever happen to you? What would you suggest doing in this case?

Thanks!
