Meaning of Followers on BP

I was recently informed that I have 47,000 followers.  That was news to me.  I'm not exactly sure what that means.  Is there an explanation on "Following" here on BP?  I found an old thread from @Mindy Jensen asking members for their input on making it more useful.  Where did we land on that?

Anyway, thank you to everyone that decided to follow me.  I'd love to know how I can continue to provide posts and replies that made you follow me in the first place.  Feel free to reach out :)
