Highlighting a member

I know this has been covered before- and maybe I am crazy, but on my desktop I have to try so many methods to try and get the highlight to work.  I try to just use the @ sign, I will hold shift- press the @ sign- then type, etc.  Sometimes the names pop up on the bottom, sometimes they dont.  Sometimes just names already on the post will pop up or not the person I am looking for.  I am guessing it might just be my desktop- anyone else have this issue OR better yet, had it and now have no issues?
