why are some threads labeled "sticky"?

I saw one person suggest clicking on the "sticky" topics above a post. What is that & how does it work?

@Jeff Weissman look at any of the individual forums (e.g. such as this thread is in a forum called 'Bigger Pockets Q&A...') You'll see some posts are at the top and labeled as 'sticky. ' This just means the folks running BP have deemed them important enough to have them remain at the top when you view the forum so they are more prominent.
